Phthalates, pronounced “thal-ates” are man-made chemicals found in many everyday household products. They are generally used by manufacturers to make plastics more flexible and to stabilize fragrances. As a result, they are found in many infant lotions and powders, and even children’s toys. But why are they a concern to you?
There is some animal research that may show a correlation between phthalates and reproductive issues such as decreased sperm count and premature puberty. It is important to note that these effects have not been seen in humans, but extensive research on this topic has not been performed.
A recent study in Pediatics February 2008, did see detectable levels of phthalates in the urine of infants tested after using baby lotions and powders. The study, however, did not research the harmful effects of these chemicals. It is believed that infants are particularly susceptible to these chemicals given their hand to mouth behavior, floor play, and still-developing reproductive systems.
Phthalates are commonly referred to as DEP, and DEHP. If they so choose, parents can look for these two chemicals in the ingredients of their baby lotions, powders, and toys, in order to avoid them. However, it is not required for manufacturers to list these chemicals in the ingredient list. I recommend to my patients limited use of lotions and powders, and minimal use of soap and shampoos. Remember, these products can be very drying to the skin as well.
Obviously, more research is needed on this subject. However, until the jury is in, keep an eye out for these chemicals!

I had no idea about this! Thanks so much for sharing all this valuable info…I’ll defintely be limiting the use and keeping an eye out about this!
This is great information! Thank you for making us aware of not well known data. Is there a particular lotion and powder that you would recommend that doesn’t have phaltates? Keep the info coming!
